Poombe Chutney

 


Thanks to my dear friend Kavitha for sharing this banana blossom with me. The banana plant is one of the plant that all the parts of the plant can be used.

Here is a recipe for chutney. Make sure that the banana blossom is firm. Discard a few bracts/petals. Start chopping them roughly. In South Canara we call the Banana Blossom as Poombe.

Ingredients:

o   1 Cup Roughly chopped banana petals

o   ¾ Cup Fresh coconut

o   ½ Tsp Tamarind paste

o   ½ tsp Turmeric powder

o   Salt and jaggery to taste

o   Chopped Cilantro to garnish

To Roast:

o   1 tbsp Urad dal

o   A pinch Fenugreek seeds

o   6-7 Bydige chillies (dry red chillies)

Seasoning:

o   ½ tsp Mustard

o   ½ tsp Urad Dal

o   ¼ tsp sesame seeds

o   A pinch of asafetida

o   Oil

o   Curry Leaves a few

 

Method:

o   Heat a little oil in a pan. Add chopped petals and turmeric powder. Saute for a minute. Add ¼ cup of water and let the petals cook for 6-7 minutes.






o   Add tamarind paste, jaggery and salt. Mix well and Let it cool.

o   Meanwhile with very little oil roast urad dal, fenugreek seeds and red chillies. Let it cool.

o   Grind the cooked petals with coconut roughly. Add the roasted ingredients and grind the chutney add water little by little.



o   Prepare the seasoning and pour over the chutney. Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve.
