Pundi Gatti

Pundi Gatti means fist sized steamed dumpling. A traditional south Indian/ Karnataka Udupi breakfast, usually prepared by soaking and grinding the rice. But here I have soaked nor grinded rice instead I have used coarse powdered rice/ Idli rava which is instant :P

Ingredients



Idli Rava
Water
Salt
Shredded Fresh coconut
Chopped Coriander leaves
2 Cups
4 Cups
To Taste
1 Tbsp
1 Tbsp
For Seasoning
Mustard seeds
Urad Dal
Chana Dal
Chopped Green chillies
Red Chillies
Asafetida
Coconut Oil
Curry leaves
½ Tsp
1 Tsp
1 Tsp
1 Tsp
2 broken
A pinch
1.5 Tsp
2 Spring
Method
1.   Keep 4 cups of water for boiling.

2.   Heat oil in a pan. Once the oil is hot add mustard seeds, Urad dal and channa dal. Onvce they start spluttering add chopped green chillies, curry leaves and asafetida. Mix well.


3.   Add the Idli rava mix well. Now slowly add boiling water, salt and shredded fresh coconut. Stir well, see that there are no lumps.


4.   The water starts to evaporate and the whole thing comes together.
5.   Now wet your hands and take a handful of the dough and make a oval shaped ball.


6.   Steam the oval shaped balls either in idli stand or a steamer for 20 mins.


7.   Serve it hot/warm with a side dish of your choice. I served the steamed rice dumplings with Coconut chutney and Vadu Mango pickle.
